Abstract
Epidemiological studies have shown the association of migraine and stroke, and individuals who have migraine with aura are particularly at high risk of ischemic stroke. Pathophysiology underlying migrainous aura and commonly shared comorbidities or genetic disorders have been implicated as potential mechanisms for the association of migraine and stroke. For primary stroke prevention, patients with migraine should be advised to avoid the factors that substantially increase the risk of stroke. For migraine patients who experienced stroke, special considerations are required for abortive therapy of migraine attack and secondary stroke prevention treatments. During the last decade, the results of pivotal randomized clinical trials testing the closure of patent foramen ovale in patients with migraine and in those with ischemic stroke have been published, which clinicians should be aware of for the management of patients.
